It is the mission of the schools that are part of the consortium that proposed this study plan (Superior Nursing School of São José de Cluny, Superior School of Health Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa — Alto Tâmega and Superior School of Nursing São Francisco das Misericórdias)forma  nurses with skills in the field of scientific, technical, ethical and legal professional practice in the area of Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, as well as skills in the field of continuous improvement of quality and management of care in conjunction with the health team.
The Specialist Nurse in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing must have a high level of knowledge and self-awareness, as a person and a nurse, capable of assisting the person throughout the life cycle, family, groups and community in optimizing mental health. Helping to recover the person's mental health by mobilizing dynamics specific to each context implies resorting to the most recent scientific evidence to support your decision, guaranteeing care practices that respect human rights and social responsibilities.

General objectives

The)Demonstrate in-depth knowledge in the specific area of mental and psychiatric health nursing and to develop it, using research, innovation and deepening of their professional skills
B)Understand and solve problems in new situations and in multidisciplinary contexts in the exercise of specialized professional activity in the area of mental health and psychiatric nursing
ç)Integrate specialized knowledge in the area of mental health and psychiatric nursing, deal with complex issues, develop solutions or issue judgments, considering the associated ethical and social implications and responsibilities
d)Communicate their underlying knowledge, reasoning and conclusions both to specialists and non-specialists in a clear and unambiguous way
and)Demonstrate skills that allow them to undertake autonomous lifelong learning
f)Develop skills in the field of professional, ethical and legal practice in the area of Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing
g)Develop skills in the field of continuous quality improvement and care management in conjunction with the health team

Professional Status

The Master's Degree in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing allows the attribution of a professional title of specialist in the area of Mental and Psychiatric Nursing by the Order of Nurses, fulfilling the necessary requirements for the development of common skills of the Specialist Nurse and specific of the Specialist Nurse in Health Mental and Psychiatric, advocated by the Order of Nurses (Regulation n.º 422 of July 12, 2018, Diário da República, 2nd series, n.º 133), and at the same time, confer the academic degree of Master on those who demonstrate the knowledge in the scientific area obtained in the 1st cycle of Nursing.

Access Conditions

- Be holder of a degree in Nursing or legal equivalent or holders of a foreign higher academic degree conferred following a 1st cycle of nursing studies organized in accordance with the principles of the Bologna process by a State adhering to that process, or holders of a foreign higher academic degree recognized as meeting the objectives of the bachelor's degree by the scientific body of the Escola Superior de Enfermagem de São José de Cluny
- Be the holder of a professional card or certificate of enrollment in the Order of Nurses, duly updated

- Have two years of professional practice at the time of application or Post-Graduate Nurses in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing
